Bobby Shew

Trumpet, flugelhorn, shewhorn

Born in Albuquerque, NM, Bobby Shew began trumpet at the age of ten. He played with the Tommy Dorsey Band (with Sam Donahue), and the bands of Woody Herman and Buddy Rich after leaving the NORAD multi-service band in 1964. As a lead player, he traveled with the likes of Robert Goulet, Paul Anka, Della Reese and Steve Allen and then plunked down in Las Vegas for nine years. He moved to Los Angeles in 1973 to return to Jazz, playing in the combos of Bud Shank, Art Pepper, Horace Silver, Frank Strazzeri, Barry Zweig and Chuck Flores. In big bands, he has played lead for Don Menza, Neal Hefti, Frank Capp-Nat Pierce, Bill Berry and Oliver Nelson, in addition to the Akiyoshi/Tabackin and Bellson units. Remarking on Bobby Shew's uncommon combination of multiple talents, Clark Terry says, "There aren't too many around who can play great lead, have tremendous chops and who can play great solos on trumpet for all kinds of songs and still play beautiful flugelhorn, too. Bobby runs the whole spectrum. He's a fantastic player and I love his flugelhorn."

Today a big band production is only possible with the enthusiasm of all participants and generous support by sponsors. Thus I want to thank sincerely our friend Bobby Shew, the musicians of the band, Dr. Ulrich Kurth of WDR and Herr Engel of Stadtsparkasse Wuppertal.
